ineffectual poetics

you say you want us to talk this out,

but i have nothing left to say

that hasn’t already been said.

i know these poems are addressed to you,

but that doesn’t mean they’re for you

you

YOU

called the act

of me dissecting my own corpse

and performing the autopsy

on my rotting remains

on paper, in verse,

“ineffectual poetics.”

and i’m not sure if i should be relieved

that you called it poetry

when there is a war raging

against the poets

who dare set the rule book aside

and write their truths their way

or if i should be sad

that you’ll never truly understand

how cathartic this is for me

because it’s ineffectual

in giving you whatever it is

you’re still hoping to find in me.
